A critical quality-control process used to verify that your digital archive files have not been corrupted, altered, or degraded by “bit rot” (the silent decay of data on storage drives) over time. In a camera digitization workflow, this is achieved by generating a unique digital fingerprint—known as a checksum or hash—for your master RAW files or processed TIFFs right after capture. By periodically recalculating this fingerprint and comparing it to the original, you can instantly prove that your digital negatives remain 100% identical to the day they were photographed.
