Film grain

« Back to Glossary Index

Film Grain: The microscopic, physical texture of metallic silver particles (in black-and-white film) or dye clouds (in color film) that forms the original analog image. When camera scanning, a successful capture doesn’t just copy the overall shapes and colors—it resolves this random, organic pattern with pin-sharp clarity. Properly capturing film grain is the ultimate test of your setup’s focus and stability; if the grain looks sharp and distinct at the pixel level, it proves your macro lens is perfectly focused and completely free of motion blur.
