Optical Character Recognition (OCR): Software technology that analyzes the shapes of letters in a digitized photograph of a document or book and translates them into machine-readable text. Without OCR, a camera-scanned page is simply a flat layer of pixels that computers can only display as a picture. Applying OCR allows the text inside that image to be fully indexed, searched, copied, and pasted, making it indispensable for digital book or document archives.
