Polarization: The optical process of filtering multi-directional light waves so they vibrate along a single, linear plane. While ambient or natural light waves radiate and scatter in all directions, reflecting off a non-metallic surface—such as glass, water, or a glossy photographic emulsion—causes those waves to align into a concentrated direction, creating hot spots and surface glare. By utilizing polarizing filters on copy stand lenses or studio lights, archivists can block these uniform glare waves, allowing the camera to capture rich color saturation, deep contrast, and fine surface textures that would otherwise be obscured.
