Tintype

« Back to Glossary Index

Tintype (Ferrotype): A historic photograph made by creating a direct positive image on a thin, lacquered sheet of iron (not actually tin). Popular in the mid-to-late 19th century, these unique plates have a slightly dark or silvery sheen and show a reversed mirror image. Because they are one-of-a-kind metal objects, flatbed scanners often struggle with their reflective surface; high-resolution camera setups are ideal for safely capturing their deep tonal range and fine physical textures without touching the delicate varnished surface.
