Film light box

« Back to Glossary Index

Film Light Box (Scanning Light Source): A dedicated, flat backlight designed to provide completely even, color-accurate illumination across the entire surface of photographic negatives or slides. In a camera scanning setup, the light box sits flat under the copy stand, acting as the primary light source passing through the film emulsion to the lens. For high-quality digitization, a light box must have a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) and a high Dynamic Range capability—meaning it emits clean, full-spectrum light that is bright enough to cut through dense, dark film shadows without creating hot spots or color casts.
