Negative inversion

The digital technique used to transform a photographed film negative into a correct, true-to-life positive image. This process reverses the tonal values (making dark areas bright and vice versa) and flips the colors to their natural state, while simultaneously correcting the orange hue inherent to color negative film bases. When digitizing film with a mirrorless camera or DSLR, the initial RAW image captures the negative exactly as it appears physically. Inversion is the vital processing step that corrects these inverted tones and color casts, rendering the RAW file into a finished, viewable photograph.
