High-end archives, such as the Library of Congress, utilize the FADGI star-rating system, which ranges from 1 to 4 stars. This system ensures every pixel is a faithful reproduction of the original. While a 4-star setup can cost upwards of $50,000, you can still achieve “2-Star” (Professional Minimal) or even “3-Star” (High Quality) results at home. The key is to focus on the mathematics of color rather than the price of the gear.

1. The Core Philosophy: Accuracy over “Beauty”
