Lens Stabilization (Optical Image Stabilization / OIS): An internal mechanical system within a camera lens that uses gyroscopic sensors to detect tiny physical movements, shifting internal glass elements via electromagnets to counteract camera shake. While indispensable for handheld photography, lens stabilization should typically be turned OFF when your camera is mounted to a sturdy copy stand. When a stabilized lens detects the absolute stillness of a heavy mount, the internal system can sometimes “hunt” for movement that isn’t there, accidentally introducing subtle blur into your digital captures.
