Metering once at the beginning of a capture session, off an 18% gray card guarantees consistent, true-to-life brightness and precise color fidelity across every photo in the batch, this is only necessary once, before each capture session.
1. Setting Up the Print Capture Area
1.Position the Copy Stand and Card: Keep the optical axis perpendicular to the 18% gray card. Mount your camera on a sturdy copy stand or tripod pointing straight down. Place your gray cad flat on the baseboard. Use a bubble level on both the camera back and the baseboard to ensure they are perfectly parallel, preventing keystone distortion and uneven focus.
2.Set Up Cross-Lighting at 45 Degrees: Eliminate surface glare and paper texture highlights. Position two identical diffused light sources at equal distances on either side of the print/card, angled down at 45 degrees. Angle lighting prevents direct light reflection from bouncing straight back into the camera lens, minimizing glare on glossy prints and flattening specular highlights on textured papers.
3.Flatten the Card Without Reflections: Use non-reflective weights or magnetic strips if needed. If the print is curled, place non-reflective heavy objects on the blank margins, or use a piece of transparent, heavy, anti-reflective acrylic over the print to flatten it completely.
2. Taking the 18% Gray Card Reading
Unlike film digitizing where you sample the unexposed film base, print digitizing uses a physical 18% neutral gray target placed directly under your lights at the exact position of the photo.

Lay the standardized 18% neutral gray card directly on top of the copy stand baseboard where your photos will be placed. For severely warped prints, place a high-optical-grade sheet of acrylic over the photograph. Always handle vintage prints wearing clean cotton gloves.
7.Capture Time: Unlike film in a dedicated holder, prints rely on the diffused lighting coming from each side and considering the lens tube extender is in place, you cannot move quite so close to the print that you restrict the light coming from the sides. It’s important to use the tube though to ensure the light reflected from the print travels straight up through the centre of the lens and to the sensor. Room lights must be off now!
